Many games presented at this year's Gamescom in Cologne, Germany wowed fans and critics alike. However, Nintendo's "Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" came out with the highest honor after being awarded as Best of Gamescom 2016.

The open world role-playing game was also celebrated as Nintendo's Best Game of the Year. Game buffs and industry observers got a glimpse of the highly anticipated game at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo last June in Los Angeles after being unveiled during the Japanese gaming giant's Treehouse Live where guests endured a long queue to play a few minutes of the game. At Germany's Gamescom, however, fans were only teased with a new video regarding the game's cooking mechanic.

For some observers, coming out on top at Europe's largest gaming industry conference isn't surprising at all. In fact, the game already made quite a strong impression at E3 2016 with their highly crowded demo event. With such a huge excitement generated by the upcoming action-adventure installment to the hugely successful "Legend of Zelda" franchise, the game bagged E3's Game Critics' Best Game award, Game Rant reported. With Nintendo's Treehouse press and demo event, the gaming company was able to convince the crowd that the game was worth the long wait. The "Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" is slated to arrive on Nintendo's Wii U and NX consoles in 2017.

Meanwhile, "Battlefield 1" join Gamescom's roster of honorees after bagging the Consumer Award. Bandai Namco's "Little Nightmares" took the event's "Indie Award." Other notable awardees include Ubisoft's "For Honor" which took home a string of honors such as the best PC and PlayStation 4 game. The best Xbox One game, however, goes to Rare's "Sea of Thieves."

Germany's Gamescom 2016 ran from Aug. 22 through Aug. 26. The complete roster of winners in the convention can be found on Gamescom's official website.
