'Lethal Weapon' season 1 air date news: Capt. Avery, Dr. Cahill to take lead in future episodes

FOX's hit new series, "Lethal Weapon," is all set to return next week with a new murder case for the Los Angeles Police Department's (LAPD) troublemaking detective duo. Will Murtaugh (Damon Wayans) and Riggs (Clayne Crawford) be able to keep up with the changes that the brand-new year will bring?

In the 10th episode of the show's digital aftershow segment "Lethal Access," executive producer Matt Miller teased fans on what's coming next now that the show has been picked up for a full 18-episode season. When the host, Johnathan Fernandez, who also plays the role of medical examiner Scorsese in the show, asked Miller to share some future storyline, the executive producer gamely shared that the recently introduced story thread regarding the Los Angeles cartel will be amped up later in the season.

There will also be an episode that focuses on LAPD's Capt. Avery (Kevin Rahm), which could suggest that the seemingly diligent and straight-shooting captain may not be as clean as he plays himself out to be. Police psychologist Dr. Cahill (Jordana Brewster) will also take the spotlight in one episode that reveals her side job of providing therapy for prisoners.

Meanwhile, in the upcoming episode 10 titled "Homebodies," Murtaugh will be lumped in with a temporary new partner for a yet unidentified reason, and finds comfort in the brief reprieve he gets from his reckless partner Riggs. But how much time will Murtaugh get to spend with this temporary partner before he realizes that he'd really much rather have Riggs by his side?

Their investigations into the death of a millennial "designer drug" dealer will lead the duo to the silent disco scene and then right in the middle of a turf war between a group of new generation drug dealers and a Koreatown gang. Meanwhile, Trish (Keesha Sharp) will also be attempting to set Riggs up on a date with her co-worker. Will this woman be able to help Riggs move on from his late wife Miranda (Floriana Lima), or will she only make him miss her more?

"Lethal Weapon" season 1 episode 10 will air on Wednesday, Jan. 4, at 8 p.m. EST on FOX.
