'Lucifer' season 2 episode 12 spoilers: Lucifer's former lovers help solve a double murder case; showrunner teases arrival of new big bad

Lucifer's (Tom Ellis) former romantic interests help solve a case on the upcoming episode of Fox's mystery drama "Lucifer" season 2.

Titled "Stewardess Interruptus," tonight's episode will reveal a new threat for Lucifer. According to the official synopsis, Lucifer and Chloe (Lauren German) have an interrupted "moment," causing tension between the two of them. Their awkward encounter makes it difficult for them to investigate a murder case involving two victims, who both happen to be Lucifer's ex-flames.

Since Lucifer is the only connection between the victims, interviews are conducted with his recent lovers. They soon make a shocking connection that makes them one step closer to identifying the killer. Elsewhere, Charlotte (Tricia Helfer) continues her attempts to manipulate Chloe and Lucifer's blossoming romance. Toward the end of the episode, a bigger threat is revealed.

The episode airing tonight will feature the arrival of a new character: Dr. Jacob Carlisle (Tim DeKay). He is a very intelligent neuroscience professor who crosses paths with Lucifer. Their first meeting will have deadly ramifications for a special person in Lucifer's life.

Speaking with TV Line, co-showrunner Ildy Modrovich teased that tonight's "Lucifer" will launch a three-episode arc featuring Dr. Carlisle as the main villain. "We always try to explore duality and the gray area — you don't have just 'bad guys' and 'good guys.' And that's kind of him, basically," Modrovich explained, referring to the show's latest big bad. "He starts doing terrible things, but his intentions aren't bad. He was faced with making a horrible moral call, in the middle of distress, and now he's kind of backpedaling from that. But in doing that, he does bad things," the showrunner added.

"Lucifer" returns from its winter break tonight, although it will be airing for just three episodes. The Fox drama will then resume its season on May 1.

The second season of "Lucifer" airs every Monday night at 9 p.m. ET on Fox.
