Fox's fantasy procedural "Lucifer" has been given an early renewal for the 2017–18 season.

The Tom Ellis-led drama is the second Fox series to be picked up for next season, joining "The Simpsons" and "Empire." Despite its low-key midseason premiere last season, "Lucifer" easily became a fan-favorite that led to its season renewal back in May. To date, it ranks 50th among broadcast shows, with a 1.9 rating in the 18–49 demographic and 6.2 million viewers in the latest live-plus-7 Nielsen averages. The series receives a total of 8 million viewers when the number of multiplatform viewers are taken into account.

"'Lucifer' is one of those rare shows that starts strong out of the gate, and just keeps getting better and better," network entertainment president David Madden said in a press statement. "Tom, Lauren [German] and the entire cast have really made these characters three-dimensional, and the production team... We'd also like to thank our partners Warner Bros. for their commitment to this show and we look forward to seeing where this wildly innovative series takes us in season three," he added.

Based on the characters created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth, and Mike Dringenberg, "Lucifer" follows Ellis' Lucifer Morningstar as he leaves his job as the gatekeeper of Hell and decides to live in Los Angeles. Aside from owning a club, Lucifer also helps the LAPD solve crimes in the area.

The midseason finale left off with Lucifer and Chloe desperately looking for a cure for the latter. Chloe collapses and is hospitalized, leading Lucifer to temporarily stop his heart to enter Hell and find the person who has the antidote. After being revived, he meets up with Ella and Dan to complete the antidote. Charlotte attempts to make peace with her son, but he disowns her for deceiving him. The hour wrapped up with Chloe visiting Lux and discovering that it was already closed for business. Also, Lucifer was nowhere to be found.

The second season of "Lucifer" returns Monday, May 1, at 9 p.m. ET on Fox.
