MacBook Air 2017 air date, specs latest news: Apple working on upgrade or ditching the series?
This year's update for the MacBook Air has disappointed a number of consumers since the latest unit only included an optional RAM upgrade for the 13-inch laptop. Aside from this, Apple decided to discontinue production of the 11-inch MacBook Air. Hence, Apple junkies are expecting better updates to arrive in 2017.
According to reports, Apple might be planning to discontinue the MacBook Air series entirely. Since a new Air wasn't announced at any of this year's Apple events, reports suspect that the tech giant might let go of the entire series. The company's latest MacBook Pro is smaller and thinner than the current unit of the MacBook Air.
To note, aside from discontinuing the 11-inch units, Apple made the current 13-inch unit more expensive. The latest 13-inch MacBook Air which has a 128 GB SSD costs $999. Meanwhile, the laptop's 256 GB SSD is priced at $1,199.
Reports suggest that the Cupertino-based tech giant could introduce a 15-inch MacBook Air. This time, the new model will reportedly be thinner and lighter than its preceding unit. It will also feature USB Type-C ports instead of the usual Type-A ports, reports say.
The MacBook Air series is already eight years old. Since Apple has been producing better laptops part of a different series, perhaps the tech giant will be discontinuing the laptop line. If Apple is developing new MacBook Air laptops, these devices are expected to launch between March and May next year.
A Russian trademark filing claimed that the tech giant has trademarked three new model numbers: A1706, A1707 and A1708. According to reports, the new MacBook Air will be a 12-inch and 13-inch MacBook as well as a 15-inch MacBook Pro.
Since Apple has yet to comment on the latest rumors, tech enthusiasts should treat the latest reports as speculation until proven otherwise.
