MacBook Air 2017 latest news: Will Apple discontinue the MacBook Air lineup?

The future remains uncertain for Apple's MacBook Air lineup.

During the Apple event last October, no new MacBook Air was announced. Instead, the current MacBook Air was used as a comparison for size, performance, and weight in launching the new MacBook Pro in the said event. The new MacBook Pro boasts of its smaller dimensions and of being thinner than the existing MacBook Air.

The 11-inch MacBook Air has recently been discontinued, and several rumors suggest that this move is a sign of Apple discontinuing the entire MacBook Air product line, including the 13-inch model.

As reported by Macworld, tech blogger Jack March have spoken with a source that alleges the complete discontinuation of Apple's Air brand, including the MacBook Air and the iPad Air products. It is also rumored that Apple won't be releasing an iPad Air 3 now that the iPad Pro is designed with a 9.7-inch option.

The iPad Pro may be the official replacement of the 11-inch MacBook Air if the previous comments of Apple's chief executive Tim Cook to the Telegraph back in 2015 are taken into consideration.

"I think if you're looking at a PC, would you buy a PC anymore? No really, why would you buy one?" Cook told Telegraph.

"Yes, the iPad Pro is a replacement for a notebook or a desktop for many, many people. They will start using it and conclude they no longer need to use anything else, other than their phones," he added.

There are also reports that Apple has plans to launch a 13-inch MacBook alongside the 12-inch MacBook, which will ultimately and completely render the MacBook Air lineup redundant and unnecessary in the future.

It can be recalled that the MacBook Air recently got updated last April 2016, the only improvement being the increased RAM. However, the screen and overall design of the device remained the same. Additionally, it was not even equipped with Retina display.
