'Narcos' composer Pedro Bromfman talks about keeping the show's music realistic and true to old setting
Pedro Bromfman is the man behind the musical score of crime thriller "Narcos." He is responsible for adding more life to scenes, interlocking the cultural context and the actors' emotions as evoked by the tone of the situation with the musical element playing in the background. He shared details about bringing in real instruments to be able to produce real sounds to match the theme of "Narcos." Bromfman also hints a little about what to expect from season 2.
The iDigitalTimes reported about how music composer Bromfman preferred to veer away from electronics and instead stick with organic sounding. He said that music shifts happen so much depending on the necessity of the current mood of the scenes. He cited Pablo Escobar's (Wagner Moura) character changes going from a fun, globe-trotting drug lord to a little mad and paranoid. About this, Bromfman said that the music needed to be altered in order to go with the flow of the character transformation. After all, music in a show is readily at hand to hopefully assist in making the audiences feel the story, the characters and their emotions involved in the tale.
Bromfman combined South American melodies and played quite a selection of Latin instruments to create the signature "Narcos" music.
In his interview with GoldDerby, the musician spoke of what is in store for "Narcos" fans in its second season. He mentioned Escobar's transition from a drug cartel leader who enjoyed his money to a regular person who was starting to be bothered by his inner demons and left with no choice but to deal with these inner demons, just as well as he had to start dealing with those on the outside. This will carry on in the second season, which will center on the hunt of Escobar from several sides and by several different characters such as the authorities and other drug cartels.
Season 2 of "Narcos" will also show more of the personality of everyone. In this regard, Bromfman shared that what he loves about the series is that there is no black-and-white character and that everyone is gray, playing both sides making them interestingly complicated. The characters have their shady ways to get what they need.
"Narcos" season 2 is expected to premiere on Netflix in August.
