'Narcos' season 3 updates, spoilers: Unconfirmed season 3 to tackle Cali Cartel?
With notorious Colombian drug kingpin Pablo Escobar (Wagner Moura) meeting his end, as he did in real life in 1993, in "Narcos" season 2, fans of the Netflix crime thriller are left to wonder whether or not the series has a future beyond its second season and what story it could tell in a possible third season.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, "Narcos" showrunner Eric Newman referenced a potential season 3 storyline, saying that "Narcos" was never intended to be solely about Escobar.
"'Narcos' is about cocaine and cocaine continues beyond Escobar," he said. According to the "Narcos" showrunner, the series was inspired by the Osama bin Laden situation, wherein so much time and resources were put into capturing the al-Qaeda founder. But by the time bin Laden was finally killed, he had been residing in a suburb of Pakistan, seemingly not having much to do enacting terrorism at the time of his death.
"And now we're dealing with the guys that took over for him," Newman said. "That's how we look at Escobar."
The "Narcos" season 2 finale seemed to point at the Cali Cartel as the next focal point of the Netflix series, with Hélmer "Pacho" Herrera (Alberto Ammann) possibly filling the void left by Moura's Escobar.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Newman said: "They're certainly teed up for that, that's for sure. This show has always been about cocaine. We purposely did not call the show Pablo Escobar or Medellin."
In the interview, he said that the Medellin Cartel gave rise to the Cali Cartel, which then brought about the Mexican Cartels. Moura echoed this statement in an interview with Time, saying, "I can say that the idea is to have a third season about the Cali cartel, and another one about Mexico."
While "Narcos" has yet to be renewed for a third season, Newman also said that he and his team have a "pretty massive" amount of research from which to draw from.
All ten episodes of "Narcos" season 2 are available for streaming on Netflix.
