There is a new story about a character from the Harry Potter books. Specifically it's about the witch Dolores Umbridge who for a period served as a headmistress at Hogwarts.

J.K. Rowling, the author of the books, released the story just in time for Halloween on the Pottermore website.

In the story Rowling provides more backstory about Umbridge (played by Imelda Staunton in the Harry Potter movie). It starts with details about her family. It turns out her mother was actually a muggle named Ellen Cracknell. However, after her mother and father split, Umbridge claimed that she was a pure-blooded witch.

She then went on to study in Hogwarts and graduated as an accomplished witch at 17. She immediately joined the Ministry of Magic and served in the "Improper Use of Magic Office." Here she pretended to be sweet towards her superiors while she took credit for her colleague's work.

The malicious nature resulted in her being promoted as the head of the office before she turned 30. She soon proceeded to occupy more prestigious positions in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement.

Umbridge then went on to become the Inquisitor at Hogwarts and later headmistress by playing on the fears of the Minister of Magic Cornelius Fudge, who was paranoid about Albus Dumbledore. However, her term as headmistress of Hogwarts ended with her dismissal.

But with the return of Lord Voldemort which created a lot of commotion in the Ministry of Magic, she managed to slip into her old position unnoticed. Subsequently, as more of Voldemort's minions infiltrated the Ministry, she gained more authority and became Head of the Muggle-born Registration Commission.

After the defeat of Lord Voldemort, Umbridge was put on trial and became a prisoner at Azkaban.

Commenting on the story in Today.com, Rowling states that Umbridge is an amalgamation of two noteworthy characters in her own personal life. One is a former teacher and the other is a co-worker who loved decorating her office space with images of cats.
