The Nexus 9 from Google was one of the best tablets released last year, but it got good competition from an unexpected rival – the Xiaomi Mi Pad.

Design

When it comes to design the Mi Pad and the Nexus 9 are fairly equal. The Mi Pad has a full plastic body with rounded edges and Gorilla Glass 3 on its front and includes capacitive keys. The device looks like the iPad Mini 2. As for the Nexus 9, it also has a plastic body which is curved on its back and a metal band running around its edge, giving it a premium look and feel.

Display

The Nexus 9 handily beats its competitor in terms of display, thanks to its bigger IPS LCD screen measuring 8.9 inches which has a resolution of 1536 x 2048 pixels and a density of 281 pixels per inch. The Mi Pad has a smaller IPS LCD screen measuring 7.9 inches with a resolution of 1536 x 2048 pixels and a density of 324 pixels per inch.

Specs

Specs is where both devices turn out to be surprisingly equal as the Mi Pad has an Nvidia Tegra K1 chipset, coupled with a quad-core Cortex-A15 CPU clocked at 2.2 GHz and a ULP GeForce Kepler GPU with 192 cores. On the Nexus 9 is an Nvidia Tegra K1 chipset, coupled with a dual-core Denver CPU clocked at 2.3 GHz and a Kepler DX1 GPU.

Memory

When comparing their memory slots, the Mi Pad emerges with a significant advantage as it has a slot which can be used to add up to 128 GB of external storage while the Nexus 9 comes without a slot. However, both devices have a similar 2 GB RAM.

Camera

The Nexus 9 and the Mi Pad have similar 8 megapixel cameras at their rear, but in the front, the Mi Pad has a 5 megapixel version compared to the 1.6 megapixel front shooter of its competitor.

Price

The Mi Pad with 16 GB onboard storage costs $241 while the 16 GB Nexus 9 costs $399.99.
