NFL trade rumors: Dak Prescott to take over Dallas Cowboys' starting job from Tony Romo?
The Dallas Cowboys have serious roster issues to resolve especially with their defensive line as the team prepares for this year's season opening of the National Football League. But out of nowhere comes Cowboys rookie quarterback Dak Prescott in a sensational preseason debut that created a current Prescott mania among Dallas' NFL fans. The rookie's rise to fame, however, might create a serious dilemma over Tony Romo's future as a starter.
In two preseason games he played, the quarterback has so far posted an impressive 22 of 27 passes for 338 yards, four rushing field touchdowns, and no interceptions. He first came to limelight during the Cowboys' 28-24 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. The fourth-round pick from Mississippi became an instant sensation after outplaying 2016 NFL Draft top pick Jared Goff. In that game, the rookie stole the entire show from Goff after finishing 10 of 12 passes for 139 yards plus two field touchdowns with no interceptions, USA Today reported.
With his stellar field performance two-game preseason performance, the NFL rumor land is currently replete with speculations about Prescott taking over Tony Romo's starting job. Romo's football career has faced major setbacks after a string of injuries affected his gameplay. In his last season, the Dallas quarterback participated in just four games, managed to complete 68.6 percent of his passes, and recorded just five touchdowns against seven interceptions. However, Cowboys executive Stephen Jones responded to Romo's trade rumors and said that the 36-year-old athlete will probably remain with the team until retirement.
"Inside, everybody has always had respect for Tony. I just think his value speaks for itself. He's one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL, if not the top. I wouldn't trade him for anybody," said Jones per Sportsday report.
With regard to Prescott's impressive preseason performance, Jones said that the rookie will not replace the primary starting job. Instead, he will serve as Romo's main backup starter.
