Nintendo has introduced its next video game console which was formerly codenamed the Nintendo NX.

On Thursday, Oct. 20, the company announced the Nintendo Switch, its highly anticipated hybrid gaming system. A three-minute teaser trailer highlighting the new console's impressive graphics, portability, and various configurations was also released.

"Nintendo Switch allows gamers the freedom to play however they like," Reggie Fils-Aime, president and chief operating officer of Nintendo of America, said in a press release. "It gives game developers new abilities to bring their creative visions to life by opening up the concept of gaming without boundaries," he added.

Based on the short video for the Nintendo Switch, the upcoming gaming system confirms the rumors gaming enthusiasts have been hearing about for months. It is indeed a handheld console that also connects to a television when placed in the Nintendo Switch Dock. Out of the Dock, it transitions into portable mode and can be used with the two detachable parts that act as individual controllers. The controllers, called Joy-Cons, slide out of the controller shell.

The device has a high-definition display for when the device is in handheld mode. Multiple Switch consoles can be used at once for multiplayer gameplay.

To connect the Switch to a TV, the controllers are simply slid back into the sides of the device and the entire thing is placed into the Dock. The games for the Nintendo Switch come in cartridges similar to the ones for the Nintendo 3DS. The Nintendo Switch is powered by a custom Tegra processor from Nvidia.

"The Nintendo Switch's gaming experience is also supported by fully custom software, including a revamped physics engine, new libraries, advanced game tools and libraries," NVIDIA announced. "NVIDIA additionally created new gaming APIs to fully harness this performance. The newest API, NVN, was built specifically to bring lightweight, fast gaming to the masses," it continued.

Nintendo has yet to announce the price for the Nintendo Switch.

According to the Nintendo Switch teaser trailer, the hybrid gaming system will be made available in March 2017. No exact release date has been announced.
