Nvidia Shield Portable vs. Nintendo Switch news: Nvidia might have cancelled the new Shield Portable sometime after FCC filing

The Nintendo Switch is the latest craze in gaming, but some observers think that Nvidia may be planning to release a new Shield Portable that can give the Switch a run for its money in terms of portability.

It should be noted that the existence of the new Shield Portable is highly questionable right now since it started out as a rumor. There were indeed rumblings about a new handheld device developed by Nvidia last year, however, Chaim Gartenberg of The Verge has reported that the company probably nixed the idea before they had a chance to develop it.

"Unfortunately, the odds of the second-generation Shield coming to market seem somewhat slim, given that the documents were submitted to the FCC on July 15th, 2016. Barring some extraordinary reason for Nvidia to delay the device, it seems probable that the company decided to cancel the product sometime after filing for approval," Gartenberg said in his report earlier this month.

A new Shield Portable would have competed with the Switch in the handheld console market, but it looks like Switch may not be facing any stiff competition when it launches. The original Shield Portable was launched back in 2013 and it hasn't seen any major update since, so it's not exactly going to compete with the Switch.

Meanwhile, Nintendo is pinning its hopes on the Switch, and they believe that it's going to perform better than the Wii U. In an interview with GameSpot last week, Nintendo's Reggie Fils-Aime spoke about why the Switch was going to succeed where the Wii U failed to impress.

During the interview, Fils-Aime pointed out that they have made sure that the public knows what the Switch has to offer this time around. He also said a number of popular games will come out frequently on the console to keep the users engaged.

"Wii U will go down as having fantastic content--the issue was as you look at the reality of exactly when the games were launched, there were large gaps in between," he stated.

The Switch will hit the shelves on March 3. Unfortunately, the new Shield Portable may never come out.
