'Once Upon a Time' season 6 spoilers, plot news: Aladdin as new savior? Hook's mother introduced in upcoming season?
During the San Diego Comic-Con, the creators of "Once Upon a Time" revealed that adding Aladdin into the roster of characters has always been part of the plan. Now, ABC's fantasy drama is ready to explore a whole new world with the arrival of characters from Agrabah.
It was while the cast and producers of the show were engaged in a panel discussion that a new clip from the premiere episode of season 6 was played to introduce Aladdin (Deniz Akdeniz) and Jafar (Oden Fehr). There, showrunners Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz admitted that they have been hoping to add said characters, including Jasmine (Karen David), into the show's storyline for some time now.
"It's been a long time coming," Horowitz said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. "We talked about using these characters pretty much since the first season, internally. It was always about the right time and when it would fit into the storytelling the way we wanted to. With the Land of Untold Stories and with Jekyll (Hank Harris) and Hyde (Sam Witwer) I think you'll see that the Aladdin, Jasmine, Jafar story folds in neatly."
The reel shown at the SDCC seemed to point to Aladdin as a savior just like Emma Swan (Jennifer Morrison). According to Kitsis, the arrival of a new savior will give the production team an opportunity to explore Savior mythology.
"I would say that the fact that there's another Savior out there and last year we dove into Dark One mythology, I'd say this year we're going to dive into Savior mythology. That's kind of how Aladdin would impact our characters," Kitsis said.
The showrunners said little about Jasmine, who wasn't even included in the Comic-Con footage. Apparently, they want to keep her introduction a surprise. Still, they did say that she would be "a strong character with an agenda all her own."
In other "Once Upon a Time" news, Kitsis teased that season 6 will delve deeper into Captain Hook/Killian Jones' (Colin O'Donoghue) backstory, with the possibility of introducing one of his relatives. Hook's character has been a mystery – an antagonist for a while, seducing Rumplestiltskin's (Robert Carlyle) wife, and then showing there was good in him when he fell in love with Emma. Having his own season 6 would help viewers get to know him better.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Kitsis and Horowitz hinted that the sixth installment could do a backstory on Hook's mother. They likewise said Hook and Emma would probably enjoy domestic bliss, with Hook going as far as looking for a job. As for Emma, she would be discovering would discover more about herself, as well as what it means to be a Savior.
