"Outlander" fans will be in for quite a change in scenery when the show's third season debuts.

In a recent appearance at the Edinburgh International Television Festival, "Outlander" showrunner Ronald D. Moore talked about the upcoming third season of "Outlander" and the various places it will take avid viewers.

While the new season will kick off in Scotland, it will also take fans on a major eighteenth-century sea voyage through several continents.

"As different as season two was from season one, season three will be again from season two," Moore said.

"I don't think I'm giving too much away but the story of season 3 will start in Scotland," he explained. "Then there's a sea voyage involved in the 18th century, an extended journey across the Atlantic, and then the story goes to Jamaica and the Caribbean and ending up in the New World."

According to Moore, while the new "Outlander" settings have been "exciting creatively," they have also been "really hard in terms of production."

Moore explained that, typically, working on a show's third or fourth season would be a cinch compared to working on the previous ones, as the cast and crew would have grown familiar with the sets and shooting locations. But with "Outlander," Moore said, "it's like you're doing a whole new series every year."

The "Outlander" boss, who has previously worked on "Battlestar Galactica" and "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," revealed that "Outlander" is his first literary adaptation and that he had taken on the challenge of adapting a best-selling series of novels because of the "freshness" to it.

He also shared that the intelligence and strength of character of "Outlander" heroine Claire Randall, played by Caitriona Balfe, was one of the things that drew him to the project.

"Outlander" season 3 is based on "Voyager," the third installment in Diana Gabaldon's "Outlander" series of historical/time-travel novels.

Starz has not announced the official release date for "Outlander" season 3.
