'Pokemon Sun and Moon' latest news: Over 14.6 million copies of 'Sun and Moon' sold in 2016

Nintendo's "Pokemon Sun and Moon" are selling like hotcakes, and they are now reportedly on track to become the most popular games in the entire Nintendo 3DS library.

"Pokemon Sun and Moon" was launched by Nintendo worldwide last year, on Nov. 18, which is also the Friday before Thanksgiving. By the end of that month, 3.7 million units of the game were sold in North America, which made them the fastest-selling games ever launched by Nintendo in the region.

Since then, the sales performance of the games has only continued to increase. In its overall earnings report from April to December 2016, Nintendo revealed "Pokemon Sun and Moon" to be Nintendo's top seller. By the end of 2016, the games have sold a whopping 14.69 million copies, which is just 1.5 million short of the units sold by "Pokemon X and Y" over its lifespan since its launch in 2013.

Within that time, the games have only been out on the market for 44 days, which meant that Nintendo had been selling units of "Pokemon Sun and Moon" at an average of nearly 334,000 copies per day, according to Polygon.

"The release of the smart device application Pokémon Go led to increased sales of software in the Pokémon series released in the past and drove Nintendo 3DS family hardware sales growth, particularly outside of Japan," said Nintendo in its third-quarter earnings release, according to Polygon.

If "Sun and Moon" continue to sell at the rate they have managed to be sold so far, the duo game titles will reportedly surpass the sales numbers of other titles listed above them on the all-time 3DS list.

At present, the best-selling 3DS game of all time is the previous Pokemon adventure video game, "Pokemon X and Y," which has sold 16.06 million copies worldwide since its launch back in 2013. Coming in second is "Mario Kart 7," having sold 14.82 copies since it debuted in 2011.

Should there be no surprise catastrophe involving the games, "Pokemon Sun and Moon" is currently selling well enough to land the top spot in the 3DS library sometime in the near future.
