The upcoming first-person shooter "Prey" is not a sequel to the video game of the same name released back in 2006; rather, it is a "reimagining" of the original title. The reboot, which is being developed by Arkane Studios and Bethesda Softworks, has a new trailer that previews the gameplay and narrative of the science fiction game.

The footage that was unveiled at The Game Awards on Dec. 1 highlights some of the important aspects of "Prey" that players can look forward to once it is released next year.

"Prey" features human Morgan Yu who is aboard the Talos I, a space station that is populated by hostile aliens called the Typhon. At this time, specific details of the game's protagonist are still unknown. However, according to Arkane co-founder and creative director Raphael Colantonio, this is actually intentional.

"Figuring out who you are is actually really part of the surprise of the game. The only thing that we can say is that you are part of an experiment somehow, and that's pretty much all you know when things go wrong. There's no backstory. You're a scientist," Colantonio told Game Informer.

On the other hand, three types of the Typhon aliens have already been revealed — the spider-like Mimic, the aggressive humanoids called Phantom, and the horrifying Nightmare. Players will also come across other hostile hazards, as well as robotic assistants called Operators.

"Prey" will also utilize the creative abilities of its players as there are a lot of customizable features in the game. Neuromod is how players will be able to upgrade by taking advantage of and combining the powers found in the title, including Mimic Matter, Superthermal, Kinetic Blast, and Leverage. Furthermore, players will also be able to create their own weapons and items.

Game Informer has "Prey" on the cover of its January issue. In anticipation of its release, the magazine will be releasing new details for the upcoming game all throughout the month of December. The ongoing coverage can be found on its dedicated website.

"Prey" will be available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Microsoft Windows PC. It is expected to arrive sometime in 2017.
