Who will be the next king of the United Kingdom and the other Commonwealth realms?

A survey published last Monday, Jan. 16, by Opinium Research has revealed that majority of the British public does not want Prince Charles to succeed Queen Elizabeth II after her death or abdication of the British throne. Instead, results of the survey showed that the public heavily favored Prince William as the next inheritor of the royal crown.

As reported by Express, the 34-year-old Duke of Cambridge is more popular than the heir to the throne, Prince Charles, with 52 percent of the public preferring that Prince William sit on the British throne next rather than his father, who polled at just 27 percent. The online survey was conducted among 2,003 adults from Dec. 29, 2016 until Jan. 3, 2017.

The survey also revealed that much of monarchy's popularity is reliant on the public approval for the queen. The survey also featured questions about the potential inheritor of the throne who will be continuing the legacy of the 90-year-old royal.

According to the International Business Times, concerns over the next British king arose after the queen had skipped the annual royal holiday celebrations, including Christmas and New Year services, because of a heavy cold. Her illness gave rise to reports of her giving up her royal duties and to escalated rumors of her death.

Should that happen, Queen Elizabeth II's son, Prince Charles, is set to take the throne. The Prince of Wales is the first in line to the British throne, followed by Prince William, and then the Duke of Cambridge's son, Prince George.

However, concerns over the next British monarch could be put on hold since the queen has already made her first public appearance this 2017 last Jan. 8, having attended the morning church service at St. Mary Magdalene Church. She later attended another church service last Sunday, following the death of her former brother-in-law, Lord Snowdon.
