PS4 Pro spec rumors and release date: Microsoft Exec says hardware won't be enough for "true 4K"

Console gamers have been getting a lot of flak from a part of the online community known as the "PC Master Race." A lot of the teasing comes from the consoles' lack of ability in allowing fans to experience 4K resolution gaming, something that a lot of high-end PC owners have been able to achieve. Console developers are fighting back, however, and the PS4 Pro and Xbox One Scorpio are said to even out the playing field when it comes to 4K gaming — or will they?

Microsoft executive Albert Penello, who is currently leading the plans for Xbox, talks about the PS4 Pro's marketing and how the console compares with Scorpio.

He says, "I think there are a lot of caveats they're giving customers right now around 4K. They're talking about checkerboard rendering and up-scaling and things like that. There are just a lot of asterisks in their marketing around 4K."

He then goes on to talk about the plans that they have for Xbox Scorpio, which they say will be able to render 4K resolution natively. He says that 4.2 teraflops is "not enough" to do true 4K, so some are speculating that the device will run at about 6 teraflops.

Microsoft is clearly boasting a powerful machine but some fans speculate that the Xbox Scorpio will be rather pricey because of all the extra rendering power. 4.2 teraflops of rendering power is worth about $400 in the market, so one that renders on 6 would be worth a lot more. The math says it could cost around $571.43.

Should gamers believe the Microsoft executive's observations about the PS4 Pro? Or should they just wait for both consoles to release and try it for themselves?

The PS4 Pro releases close to the holidays on Nov. 10, 2016. The Xbox Scorpio has no set release date yet but it is expected to launch around the holiday season.
