The upcoming "Quantico" season 2 will have less fluff and more depth, its showrunner has revealed.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, "Quantico" producer Joshua Safran spoke about how the ABC terrorism thriller will be going back to its roots and taking on a more mature and sober tone.

According to Safran, his original vision for the Priyanka Chopra-starrer was more of a suspenseful thriller and less of a melodramatic soap, and this is just what the new season will be. He said that for season 2, he has toned down some of the freshman season's unnecessary subplots, including many of the romantic relationships and other entanglements featured in it.

With season 1 under his belt, Safran intends on getting "Quantico" back to what it was intended to be and has reset many aspects of the show.

"Season 2 deals with issues of morality, about the lines you can and cannot cross," he told the outlet. "That has made the show more mature, more introspective," he continued.

"It's still got fun in it, it's still got sex in it," he said, "but no one's hopping into bed with each other every episode. Season 2 is what the pilot promised. It's more like the pilot in every way."

"It's not a reboot, and it's not a sequel," he clarified. "It's like the next novel in a book series."

Although the series may be moving to the CIA from the FBI, returning characters such as Miranda (Aunjanue Ellis), Ryan (Jake McLaughlin), Shelby (Johanna Braddy), and twins Nimah and Raina (Yasmine Al Massri) will help connect the first and second seasons.

But of course, there will be new additions to the cast. Earlier this year, TV Line reported that the series is looking to cast a 20-something African-American actress in the role of a new agent named Lydia. This new character was described as a "sharp and sexy" lady who is "Jessica Jones by night, Jessica Chastain in 'Zero Dark Thirty' by day.'"

"Quantico" season 2 debuts Sunday, Sept. 25, at 10 p.m. EDT on ABC.
