San Antonio Spurs trade rumors: Looking for bench spark through Rudy Gay
Despite Tim Duncan's retirement, the San Antonio Spurs remain as one of the best teams in the National Basketball Association.
They had a surprisingly disappointing season last year as they bowed out of the second round of the NBA Playoffs to the Oklahoma City Thunder.
However, many still claim that they have a chance to compete in the coming years with a core of Kahwi Leonard and LaMarcus Aldridge.
The team may still be looking to add more firepower to compete with other teams, and reports say the Spurs are eyeing Rudy Gay of the Sacramento Kings.
If this should push through, Gay would be a great off-the-bench player as he is a potent scorer and can definitely put some load off Leonard who is also a small forward.
Picked eighth overall in the 2006 NBA Draft, Gay is a 10-year veteran who has played for three different teams in his professional stint.
Gay spent his first six and a half seasons with the Memphis Grizzlies, averaging 17.9 points per game. He was then traded off to the Toronto Raptors in the middle of the 2012-13 season where he also had the same success.
However, he only spent until the middle of the 2013-14 season before being sent over to the Kings where he has spent the last two and a half seasons.
Already 29 years old, Gay is still cashing in on his current contract which should pay him $13.3 million in the coming season. The deal is set to expire after the 2017-18 season, but Gay still has the player option to become a free agent in the final year of his contract.
The Kings are still out of the playoff contention despite having great players like Gay and DeMarcus Cousins. Although with Cousins being linked to a move away from Sacramento, Gay may be best suited to look for a contender who he can help in order to finally get that elusive NBA championship.
