Sony recently released screenshots of "Shadow of the Beast," a possible indication that the game is approaching its still unannounced release date.

There has been very little information about the game since it was first announced at Gamescom in Cologne way back in 2013.

When the game designed by Heavy Spectrum is eventually released, it is expected to land exclusively on the PS4.

However, the game appears destined never to become an AAA game but largely an indie development currently being worked on by a small team.

Heavy Spectrum is led by its founder and principal game designer Matt Birch. He was at hand to show off the game at the digital showcase for Sony's PlayStation 4.

Birch described how he was inspired by the original 16-bit "Shadow of the Beast" which was released about 25 years back. He said the game under development would be a reboot of the old game.

The demo of the upcoming game showed that it is going to be a side scroller filled with attacks by hordes of enemies. At the center of the action is the protagonist Aarbon who is seeking revenge after being transformed from a human into monster by an evil force known as Maletoth. This has left Aarbon with claws and all the characteristics of a living weapon.

All the action in the game takes place in the shadow of a colossal beast that died and rotted away with its bones dominating the landscape and horizon.

Aarbon finds himself in an alien wasteland where civilization one flourished. There he must fight his enemies, using his huge claws to hack them to pieces.

In the released screenshots, many of Aarbon's enemies were depicted, an indication that the game would stay true to the original version.

"Shadow of the Beast" is just one of the other indie games Sony is developing for the PS4. The others include "Alienation," "Hollowpoint" and "Everybody's Gone to the Rapture."
