"Shameless" season 7 debuted on Sunday night, kicking off a new chapter in the story of the dysfunctional Gallaghers three months earlier than usual.

The dramedy, which typically premieres in January, opened its seventh season with the Gallagher siblings working on reinventing themselves.

In the season opener, Fiona (Emmy Rossum) declared that she is done with romance; Ian (Cameron Monaghan) caught his boyfriend making out with his ex-girlfriend; Lip (Jeremy Allen White) returned from rehab intent on changing his ways; and Debbie (Emma Kenney) realized that she couldn't give up her child.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, "Shameless" executive producer Nancy Pimental spoke about Fiona's decision to stay single and what it means for the character going forward.

"It was really fun to not have to write romance stories for her this year, and to actually tell more of what Fiona is like outside of a guy," she said.

According to Rossum, the changes in Fiona's attitude does not stop at her outlook on relationships. The actress says that Fiona will try to apply the loyalty that she has for her family to herself and will henceforth insist on everyone sharing responsibility within the house.

Rossum also revealed that now that Fiona has sworn off romance, she will instead indulge in a string of hookups. The actress also told THR that her new flings will look very different than previous ones.

"I don't know why Fiona has only ever dated skinny white boys," she said, adding that for season 7, she asked the "Shameless" bosses to bring men of color in.

As for how Ian will handle what appears to be his boyfriend's bisexuality, Pimental told TV Line, "He's not happy about it."

According to the "Shameless" boss, season 7 will be turning the tables on Ian, who has only recently become comfortable in his own skin.

"It's almost like he's the phobic one now," Pimental said.

The "Shameless" executive producer also talked about the endgame for the Showtime series, admitting that there has been talk of a season 8 as well as of ending the show in a year or two.

However, "Shameless" could also stay on air for many more years. "When you have this many characters in a family where the dynamics are changing, people are growing, it could go on indefinitely," she said.

"Shameless" season 7 airs Sundays at 9 p.m. EDT on Showtime.
