'Slender: The Arrival' PS4, Xbox One Review Roundup: Simple Video Game Has Frights

BLUE ISLE STUDIOS

In the video game "Slender: The Arrival" the frights come in bunches. The game from Blue Isle Studios is the prequel to "Slender: The Eight Pages" and was recently released for the PS4 and Xbox One.

In the game, the players step into the shoes of Lauren as she searches for Kate, her friend, who has disappeared in a rural location and then encounters the other-worldly figure "Slendy."

The premise of the game is simple but extremely effective when it comes to delivering frights. Gamespot described how in the game the "system is designed to procedurally create jump scares." These are delivered in a dark setting with the player only equipped with a torch.

The objective is simple: The player has to escape "Slender" and survive after he finds out what is going on. However, the scares and the near constant stress ensure the game's effects linger on in your mind long after the two hours that it normally takes to complete it.

Gottabemobile in its review recommends that to get the best scares, the game should be played at night. It said the game is wonderfully unpredictable. Reminding that "knowledge is power," the review said the right information can gleaned by finding and reading the correct pages to gain the skills to survive.

However, the players have very little options when they are confronted by Slender. Those who press pause when he attacks gets an achievement on the Xbox One console. The review noted that the game is extremely scary in spite of being very simplistic.

Bloody Disgusting noted that the game is "mini-episodic" and the players get to explore many settings such as a house and a mine.

The shocks are reserved when Slender makes a sudden appearance to carry out an attack. In this sense, the review said the game is chiefly a process in "scare exploration."
