'Sons of Anarchy' spin-off 'Mayan MC' nabs a pilot order from FX

First look for "Sons of Anarchy" prequel spin-off, "Mayans MC" | Twitter/Kurt Sutter

The "Sons of Anarchy" franchise further branches out with its first spin-off already getting a pilot order from FX.

Titled "Mayan MC," the series has been on the backburner for quite a while after it was confirmed earlier this year to some extent that there were rumors that it was no longer pushing through. But this new development is only a testament that the show is well and running with production already penciled in for March of next year.

Treading a different narrative than that of the Jax Teller-centered (Charlie Hunnam) "Sons of Anarchy," "Mayan MC" is set in the aftermath of the biker's death. The sequel of some sort will be panning its spotlight to EZ Reyes who is a prospect for the Mayan MC charter on the California-Mexico border. The new hero will undergo major struggles in his life as he tries to balance his need to seek for revenge against the cartel and eagerness to have the respect of the women he loves. FX describes the narrative to "be a dark, visceral family drama that takes a new look at the most American of icons, the 1% outlaw, this time reflected through a Latino lens."

It can be remembered that the Mayan biker gang is an important recurring set of characters in the original run of "Sons of Anarchy" and it is interesting how Sutter will spin their independent story in the new show. The "Lucas Stand" author previously explained that he wants to tell a story from the perspective of Latinos which is why he prompted to collaborate with Elgin James who will co-executive produce "Mayan MC."

"I didn't think a white guy from Jersey should be writing about Latin culture and traditions. Elgin is that voice," he reasoned.

No official release date has been announced for "Mayans MC" but the fact that this confirms that the project is still alive is enough motivation for fans to wait a couple more months for additional details.
