'Star Trek: Discovery' news latest: recurring casting roundup for CBS's digital series

Over this month, the upcoming "Star Trek: Discovery" series has been slowly shaping up with a slew of new names filling out the roles of the characters who will man the ships in the show. The casting of Sonequa Martin-Green as the main lead of the Bryan Fuller-developed project might arguably be the biggest scoop from the production thus far, but a couple of recurring characters are also getting their dues.

Boarding the digital drama are Chris Obi, Shazad Latif and Mary Chieffo who will all be playing as the Klingons. Longtime followers of the lore know that the extraterrestrial humanoid warrior species have been part of the regular wheelhouse in terms of the antagonists of 1960s "Star Trek: The Original Series." And it is only a no-brainer for them to make a comeback given that "Star Trek: Discovery" will be set roughly a decade before the events of the William T. Shatner and Leonard Nimoy led show.

Obi will play T'Kuvma who is a leader of the pack, who aims to unite all the houses from their species. Latif, on the other hand, will play Kol, a commanding officer and protégé-mentor of T'Kuvma. Meanwhile, Chieffo will play L'Rell who is the Battle Deck Commander of the Klingon ship.

The three will join "The Walking Dead" star Martin-Green who will be the lieutenant commander of the USS Discovery named Rainsford. Often referred to as "Number One" the character will serve as the main protagonist of the show, and the narrative perspective will come from her. Doug Jones and Anthony Rapp will then be playing Saru and Stamets, respectively, while Michelle Yeoh will take on the role of Captain Georgiou of another ship in USS Shenzhou.

"Star Trek: Discovery" was originally set to premiere sometime in January 2017 but it was moved to a May rollout. It will be the first series produced and developed for CBS' new subscription streaming service, All Access. The show's pilot will be a two-hour bonanza with the first hour written by Fuller and co-creator Alex Kurtzman. The succeeding one, on the other hand, was penned by Nicholas Meyer.
