'Star Wars: Episode 8' cast news, spoilers: Kylo Ren isn't Han and Leia's son? Lupita Nyong'o confirms Maz's return
After rumors spread that Oscar winner Lupita Nyong'o may not reprise her role as the ancient pirate Maz Kanata in the upcoming "Star Wars: Episode 8," the actress came forward to clarify that Maz will indeed be in the highly anticipated film.
In previous weeks, there had been some confusion among fans of the Star Wars franchise about whether or not Nyong'o will be in the film. The rumors were initiated by reports stating that the actress had not filmed her scenes for "Episode 8," despite principal photography for it having already wrapped.
In a recent appearance on "The Ellen Degeneres Show," Nyong'o straightened things out, saying, "I don't know where this rumor came from, I have no idea."
"Because I shot my scenes, so yeah, 'Star Wars 8,' it's coming out," she said, adding that the rumors had hurt her feelings.
Meanwhile, an interesting new theory about a major premise in the current Star Wars trilogy has had fans of the franchise all abuzz this week.
In a post on the Star Wars Speculation subreddit, a user wrote that after watching "Star Wars: Episode 7: The Force Awakens," the fan came to the conclusion that the villain Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) is not the son of Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and General Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher).
According to Reddit user LemmysGhost, at no point in "The Force Awakens" do either Han or Leia directly say that Kylo is their long-lost son.
This is despite Kylo, the film's main antagonist, saying that he is Darth Vader's grandson and Luke Skywalker's (Mark Hamill) nephew.
"If you watch through 'The Force Awakens,' never once is it specifically said that Kylo is Han and Leia's son," the Redditor wrote.
"Han will say things such as 'We miss you' and Leia will say things such as 'Bring our son home.' I am fairly sure Kylo will end up being their nephew, [while] the son they speak of is a different character," the Reddit user added.
According to LemmysGhost, practically every line referencing Kylo Ren is said in that veiled manner. This, the Redditor suggested, is so that when the couple's true son is finally introduced, fans can go back to the scenes in "The Force Awakens" and see that it was never specifically said that Kylo is Leia and Han's son.
"Star Wars: Episode 8" is scheduled to hit theaters Dec. 15, 2017.
