'Star Wars Episode VIII' plot news, release date: Video explains George Lucas' original plan for the trilogy
Disney now holds the rights to two of the most successful box office franchises in history, that being the Marvel Cinematic Universe and "Star Wars." Even though the creator of "Star Wars," George Lucas, has nothing to do with the new movies that are coming out, a video has been released exploring what happened between Lucas and his originally planned "Star Wars" films.
The video comes from Youtube user, Mr. Sunday Movies, and he goes in depth as to Lucas' original plans for "Star Wars." More recently, Lucas has said that his six movies were supposed to follow the story of Anakin Skywalker aka. Darth Vader, but he had said earlier (post-"Empire Strikes Back") that he had bigger plans for the series.
In an old interview, Lucas had this to say, "I'm just going to keep it pure. It's a nine part saga that has a beginning, a middle, and an end. It progresses over a period of 50 to 60 years with about 20 years between trilogies, each trilogy taking 6 or 7 years."
With the franchise moving forward without him, it's interesting to see what happened behind the scenes and how the man behind one of the biggest brands in the world came to be merely a spectator of his created universe.
His lack of involvement allegedly stems from the poorly received prequel trilogy that he worked on in the early 2000s. He directed all three movies of the "Star Wars" prequels, and he received a lot of bashing from fans who complained that they are nowhere near as good as the very first "Star Wars" trilogy.
In the video, it reveals that "Return of the Jedi" could have ended up as a very different movie, and "Episode VII" was supposed to follow Luke as a full-fledged Jedi. "Episode VIII" would have introduced Luke's sister (who was not Leia), and "Episode IX" would have finally revealed Emperor Palpatine.
It seems that some of Lucas' ideas still made it to the new trilogy, with Luke being the new Obi-wan-type figure and the story focusing on a new bunch of heroes. Only time will tell exactly how much of his ideas were adopted in the upcoming "Star Wars" movies.
"Star Wars Episode VIII" will hit cinemas on Dec. 15, 2017.
