'Star Wars' saga film news: Lucasfilm is not recreating Carrie Fisher's General Organa as a CGI character
A couple of weeks after the untimely death of Carrie Fisher, Lucasfilm Ltd. has released an official statement regarding how General Organa will be handled moving forward in the current "Star Wars" saga.
It is no secret that the Resistance leader is tipped to be one of the main game players in the upcoming films of the "Star Wars" franchise. And while Fisher has finished filming her scenes for this year's "Star Wars: Episode VIII," it is still a mystery how her character will be handled after that. This has sparked a lot of possibilities regarding how the film's creators can possibly incorporate Fisher's death into the narrative including the notion of bringing her back to life via the advanced technology of computer-generated graphics. Some fans are citing the potential especially with the mechanism that brought the late actor Peter Cushing reprising his role as Grand Moff Tarkin in "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story." The idea has divided the fandom and now, Lucasfilm Ltd. has addressed the situation in a press release.
"We don't normally respond to fan or press speculation, but there is a rumor circulating that we would like to address. We want to assure our fans that Lucasfilm has no plans to digitally recreate Carrie Fisher's performance as Princess or General Leia Organa," the statement that was posted on the official lore's website reads. "Carrie Fisher was, is, and always will be a part of the Lucasfilm family. She was our princess, our general, and more importantly, our friend. We are still hurting from her loss. We cherish her memory and legacy as Princess Leia, and will always strive to honor everything she gave to Star Wars."
That being said, it can be assumed that sometime between now and Colin Trevorrow's "Star Wars: Episode IX," General Organa will meet her death. Which is really a shame given that it is highly rumored that Lucasfilm Ltd is looking to give her a bigger role once the trilogy capper comes. Previous leaks suggest that the freedom activist was originally tipped for two big key moments in the contemporary threequel, one with her twin brother Luke (Mark Hamill) and another with son gone rogue, Kylo Ren (Adam Driver). The questions now that remain to be a mystery include how Leia will be written out of the story given that the studio has already ruled out the possibility of recreating her via CGI.
"Star Wars: Episode VIII" is set to arrive in cinemas on Dec. 15, 2017 followed by "Star Wars: Episode IX" on May 23, 2019.
