'Suicide Squad' news, spoilers: Currently the most talked-about movie on social media; Karen Fukuhara on playing Katana

"Suicide Squad," the upcoming DC film featuring a chilling Joker played by Jared Leto and a creepy Harley Quinn played by Margot Robbie, is fast becoming one of the most highly anticipated big screen offerings this year.

According to Deadline, the film beat out other eagerly awaited 2016 films as the most buzzed-about movie on social media in the previous week. According to ComScore, "Suicide Squad" took the top spot, generating the most social media conversations. This is a major feat considering that there are some major franchises coming out this year, including a "Star Wars" film and a "Harry Potter" spin-off.

"Suicide Squad" was followed on the list by "Rogue One: A Stars Wars Story," the first stand-alone in the "Star Wars" anthology, and "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them," a long-awaited treat for Harry Potter diehards.

The other films in the Most Talked About Movies list for June 17 to 23 included "Star Trek Beyond," "Power Rangers," "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children," "The BFG," "Ghostbusters," "The Secret Life of Pets," and "The Legend of Tarzan."

Meanwhile, actress Karen Fukuhara recently spoke about taking on the role of Katana in "Suicide Squad," which marks her feature film debut. In an interview with Playboy, Fukuhara spoke about what the role meant to her.

"It's rare to see an Asian female take on the role of a badass," the actress said. "As a first-generation Japanese American, I've always wanted to play a samurai warrior like my 'Suicide Squad' character, Katana. Samurai are almost always male, so growing up in America I had a hard time figuring out role models."

According to Fukuhara, though she and Katana have different personalities, they share the same cultural upbringing and values.

"In Japanese culture there's this idea of putting others before yourself, but I've also never wanted to let myself down," she said. "Someone recently told me how refreshing it is to see an Asian woman as a superhero. That stuck with me."

"Suicide Squad" opens Aug. 5.
