Jared Leto, who makes his cinematic debut as The Joker in the upcoming antihero ensemble film "Suicide Squad," has some big shoes to fill.

The actor, whose psychopathic villain fans have already gotten to see in the film's trailers, takes over the role from some Hollywood heavyweights, including Academy Award winners Jack Nicholson and the late Heath Ledger.

Nonetheless, Leto seems to have lived up to fans' expectations, as the "Suicide Squad" trailers have revealed a truly creepy and menacing new Joker.

"Jared has been doing some amazing, transformative work in this movie," "Suicide Squad" producer Andy Horwitz told ComicBook.com.

"I think his look is very different," he added. "I think we had to obviously do something different than people have seen before."

"It's a look that took a lot of time to zero in and dial in," Horwitz said, adding that the final Joker look was something Leto, director David Ayer, and the rest of the "Suicide Squad" crew had collaborated on.

Horwitz also talked about the physical preparation Leto had done for the role, saying, "He spent a significant amount of time in prep before he got here working out." According to the "Suicide Squad" boss, because Leto is vegan, he had to find "creative ways" to gain muscle for the role.

Meanwhile, "Suicide Squad" costume designer Kate Hawley recently confirmed that the iconic jester suit Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) sports in the comics had actually been considered and built for the upcoming film. However, it didn't make the cut.

The character's original red-and-blue jester outfit is the most recognizable among all of Harley's costumes since 1992.

"The jester suit has an amazing, powerful quality to it," Hawley told Comic Book Resources, adding that they had built it and that it looked amazing on Robbie. They eventually ended up going with another look, however, as it better suited Ayer's vision for the film.

"There's beats that you think you can establish an arc within and then it changes again," she explained. "We have limited beats to show all the elements."

"Suicide Squad" hits theaters Aug. 5.
