'Super Mario 64' latest news: game transformed into 2D platform without sacrificing gameplay

"Super Mario 64" was released on Sept. 29, 1995 in the United States for Nintendo 64. The game was a success, as expected, considering that Mario has become a legend in the gaming world. In fact, gamers say that "Mario 64" is still considered one of the best games among the new and the classic titles.

The magic that "Super Mario 64" possesses is being commemorated in celebration of Nintendo 64's 20th anniversary. To honor the event, popular YouTuber Dave Pickett remade the title in D2 by using Super Mario Maker, in which the project is organized into five segments.

"Back in March when they released the update for Super Mario Maker that introduced pink coins and keys, I knew that I had to use them to create something awesome," Pickett said when he released the first video. "So the first thing I decided to do was to remake the opening section of Super Mario 64 using coins as stand-ins for stars, and the locked doors as a way to bar progress like the star doors in Super Mario 64."

On the BRICK 101 YouTube channel, Pickett rolled out the segments like a TV episode waiting to be aired. The most recent segment features Tick Tock Clock, Wing Mario over the Rainbow, Rainbow Ride and Browser in the Sky.

Fans of Mario surely know that Super Mario Maker has certain limitations as it is only capable of bringing 2D creations. Pickett had to exert a lot of effort to think of creative ways to transform "Super Mario 64" into the 2D platform, and it turned out pretty remarkable.

Digital Trends noted that Pickett did an impressive job in transforming "Super Mario 64" in a 2D platformer without affecting the gameplay, which was the selling point of the title. The publication provided the list of video episodes with respective links to each level, aside from the breakdown of each level.
