'Supernatural' season 12 spoilers, plot news: Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles on Mary's exit; creator returning for final season?

After years of being orphans, the Winchester brothers were finally reunited with their mother, Mary (Samantha Smith), at the end of "Supernatural" season 11. But the family reunion was short-lived as Mary, still reeling from the realization that her husband is dead and her little boys are now grown, decided to leave in the latest episode of season 12.

Jensen Ackles (Dean Winchester) and Jared Padalecki (Sam Winchester) sat down with Entertainment Weekly recently to talk about the brothers' response to once again losing their mother.

According to Ackles, the boys' reactions to Mary's departure was a reversal of their personalities and usual response to things. While Sam is usually the outwardly emotional one, he toned down his reaction and took the time to think about what happened and why Mary decided to go. Dean, usually the stoic one, becomes emotional and seemingly overreacts.

"...[W]e see Sam take the academic approach and Dean go like, 'This is my mom, man.'" It's a position that Sam and Dean haven't been in yet," Padalecki said.

Meanwhile, Ackles and Padalecki recently expressed hope that "Supernatural" creator Eric Kripke would return to write the show's finale. Kripke left the series six years ago and is now working on the NBC drama "Timeless."

"I would love to see Eric come back and give his opinion," Padalecki told TV Line. "Because he created us in the first place, so it would be an honor," he continued.

"It would be a nice little bow on top of the whole thing [to] have Eric take us out," Ackles added.

Fortunately, Kripke said that he is open to penning the series finale. "I do fantasize that it would be great to at least come in and be a co-writer of the finale, whenever that would be," he said, but added that the decision would be up to executive producer Bob Singer and co-showrunner Andrew Dabb.

"Supernatural" season 12 airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. EDT on The CW.
