The wait for the premiere episode of "Switched at Birth" season 5 will soon be over as the series returns to Freeform in January.

The network previously released a series of promo photos to give a sneak peek of the family drama's fifth and final season. It revealed that Bay (Vanessa Marano) and Daphne (Kate Leclerc) are having fun as they start their new lives in a foreign country after Daphne landed a job at a medical clinic and Bay turned into a tattoo artist in China. But the two are also seen back in the United States based on the other photos.

Before the end of season 4, the girls received a call from their family back home that urged them to return to Kansas. The reason why they badly need to go back to their old lives was not revealed in that episode. This could be explained once the series returns for season 5.

Several speculations claimed that Daphne and Bay were asked to go back home because their brother Toby (Lucas Grabeel) needs all the support that he and Lily (Rachel Shenton) can get for their son Carlton, who has Down Syndrome. This could mean that the baby is in danger.

Other rumors claim that Daphne's biological parents and Bay's legal parents John (D.W. Moffett) and Kathryn (Lea Thompson) are having problems in their relationship. This could lead to a divorce, and they could have wanted to talk to the girls about their decision to finally call it quits.

However, there are no confirmed reports about the real reason why Daphne and Bay had to put their plans to make it big in China on hold.

Freeform will air the premiere episode of "Switched at Birth" season 5 titled "The Call" on Tuesday, January 31, 2017. The episode is reportedly written by series creator Lizzy Weiss.
