'The Americans' season 5 air date, latest news: New trailer teases Paige's training as Soviet spy
FX recently launched the official trailer of the upcoming fifth season of its popular TV series "The American."
The trailer focuses on Paige Jennings (Holly Taylor), who is now completely aware of her parents' actual job as Soviet spies and what they are actually capable of doing. And it looks like her parents will now be grooming her for a possible role in the Reagan resistance.
Still traumatized from seeing her mother, Elizabeth (Keri Russell), kill two men who were trying to rob them, Paige is forced to train with her mother and is now being slowly introduced to the idea of being loyal to Russia.
"You have to be willing to do anything to protect yourself," Elizabeth is heard saying in the trailer.
However, according to the synopsis of "The Americans" season 5, Paige's loyalty to her parents is further complicated by her budding romance with Matthew, the son of their neighbor, FBI Agent Stan Beeman (Noah Emmerich). Stan, who is on the task force that seeks to uncover the Soviet illegals living in the country, remains to be the greatest threat to the safety of Paige's family.
With the Cold War continuing to rage on and the paranoia on both countries reaching new heights, Philip (Matthew Rhys) and Elizabeth's work as Soviet spies become even more vital and so much more perilous than before.
Created by Joe Weisberg, "The Americans" is set in the early 1980s during the Cold War, and it tells the story of an American married couple Elizabeth and Philip Jennings living in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. with their children. However, in truth, they are actually two Soviet KGB officers planted in the country to carry out covert intelligence operations.
Since it first aired, the series garnered acclaim from both critics and viewers. The show received several nominations at the recent Emmy Awards, with Margo Martindale winning her second consecutive award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series.
"The Americans" season 5 is scheduled to premiere on Tuesday, March 7, on FX.
