'The Croods 2' release date, plot news, rumors and updates: DreamWorks and Universal Pictures abandon plans for sequel
Though the animated movie "The Croods" was well-received by fans, it seems as though a new installment of the series has been canceled.
"The Croods" was presented back in 2013, which starred Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone, Ryan Reynolds, Catherine Keener, Cloris Leachman and Clark Duke. They stars played members of a quirky family who is trying to find shelter from a disaster.
Due to the success of the film, DreamWorks Animation began working on the sequel after the release. However, recent reports indicated that the studio, as well as Universal Pictures, have decided to cancel the project altogether.
It was reported that the film has been in question, despite its initial 2017 release date. Problems arose, which pushed the release date back to 2018. It was stated that Dreamworks Animation faced some challenges, which caused them to cut on some projects.
Some also speculated that the cancellation could be due to a decision by Universal Pictures, because it was announced that they are the new parent company of DreamWorks Animation. However, it was stated that the decision was made by both sides.
Other reports stated that maybe DreamWorks Animation could no longer continue the story of "The Croods," which is why they opted to cancel it. Though no official reason has been stated, many should not expect to see the family back on the big screens.
Meanwhile, other sources revealed that a Universal representative gave some insight about the future of the franchise. The source stated, "The Croods is still very much in the DreamWorks catalog. It's not unheard of that it might be something someone takes a look at in the future."
Despite this, many are not expecting a new installment from the animated series.
