'The Crown' season 2 news: Series creator hints new details about upcoming season; Claire Foy confirms exit as Queen Elizabeth II
Production for Netflix's critically acclaimed "The Crown" season 2 is currently underway, and series creator Peter Morgan recently revealed teasers about the show's anticipated return.
Morgan and some of the show's cast members graced Sunday's Golden Globes 2017 where the series took home two major awards: Best Drama and Best Drama TV Actress for Claire Foy who plays Queen Elizabeth II. While talking to reporters in the press room, Morgan shared details on the drama's next season.
"The danger of writing a story of someone with a long life is that the story goes on and on, and on," Morgan said. "We're filming the second season at the moment and that takes us up through 1964. The world changes. We leave behind a certain kind of Britain and enter a new Britain," he went on to say.
Back in December, Morgan already revealed that season 2 will highlight the backstory of Elizabeth's husband, Prince Philip, and explore the younger days of her direct heir, Prince Charles. The show was shooting in South Africa that time to film a portion of Philip's Commonwealth tour — a journey that took him away from his family for many months.
Meanwhile, lead star Foy has confirmed that she will be leaving "The Crown" after season 2. Once the program moves on to the next chapter of the reigning monarch's life story, the Netflix drama will reportedly undergo a major overhaul and bring in new actors.
"Well, after two seasons, that's it. I'm gone. They're getting rid of all of us," the 32-year-old said. Instead of being sad over her departure, the actress said she trusts the people behind the show and just chose to look at the brighter side of things. She added, "I couldn't be happier really. There'll be no 3am make-up call for me!"
The second season of "The Crown" is expected to premiere later this year, but Netflix has yet to announce an official release date.
