'The Crown' season 2 spoilers news update: Prince Philip and Prince Charles to play bigger roles next season

"The Crown" introduces a greater role for Elizabeth's (Claire Foy) husband, Prince Philip (Matt Smith), when the hit Netflix biopic returns for its much-anticipated second season.

Debuted November this year, "The Crown" follows the life of Queen Elizabeth II from her 1947 wedding up to the present day. Production for the show's sophomore run is already in progress, and it will reportedly put more focus on Elizabeth's family. Aside from exploring Prince Philip's backstory, season 2 will put a bigger role for the queen's oldest son and direct heir, Prince Charles.

Series creator and writer Peter Morgan recently spoke with People magazine, and he revealed that the next season will give more emphasis on the people closest to Queen Elizabeth. "We start to focus on Charles as a young boy and his education, and on Philip and his back story," Morgan said.

Viewers should also expect huge changes in the Britain of 1957–64 as modernity starts to arrive and affect the country. "It's goodbye to a different, Edwardian, post-Imperial world," Morgan continued. "We get a classlessness and a modernity beginning to creep in. It is going to be terrific," he went on to say.

The cast and crew have been recently spotted in South Africa to film some scenes for season 2. It is believed that the scenes are part of Philip's Commonwealth tour, which took several months before he returned home.

According to reports, "The Crown" is believed to be the streaming platform's most expensive TV series. The company has allegedly spent more than £100 million to make the drama's 10-episode season 1. Netflix content boss Ted Sarandos previously said the network's higher-ups are hoping that the series would run for six seasons because the plot will reportedly cover six decades of the queen's reign.

The second season of "The Crown" is scheduled to premiere later next year on Netflix.
