'The Defenders' premiere date, news: Sigourney Weaver's big bad persona revealed; Luke Cage serves as 'the wisdom' of the group

Sigourney Weaver has been tagged to play the villain that The Defenders will unite to fight against, and her big bad character has been revealed. Meanwhile, Luke Cage (Mike Colter) will have a certain enlightenment that will make him serve as "the wisdom" of The Defenders.

"The Defenders" is slated to debut on Netflix this year, and Weaver has long been confirmed to play the big bad. According to Entertainment Weekly from their whole coverage of the upcoming series, Weaver's character is named Alexandra.

Not much is revealed about Alexandra's background as a villain, but executive producer Marco Ramirez describes the antagonist as "a very powerful force in New York City."

Ramirez then added that Sigourney is the perfect fit to play Alexandra because he sees the two as both "sophisticated, intellectual, dangerous."

The showrunner explained that in order to unite The Defenders from their individual lives, it would have to be "something massive," but they also wanted to make sure that it was "small enough that it felt like it existed in our world."

Meanwhile, Colter shared that he's "the wisdom" and "the conciliator" of The Defenders.

Ramirez explained that since Luke was able to address his issues from his past, he has changed and has acquired a new approach to life. "Luke is someone who's, in a very mature way, compartmentalized his life," the showrunner said.

Also, out of all The Defenders, Luke is the only one publicly known as a hero. It certainly gives Luke Cage a lot of pressure, but he just might be as resistant as his skin from breaking.

Aside from being the guiding principle of The Defenders, he will also serve as Iron Fist's (Finn Jones) mentor.

"He's a young guy. There's an exuberance that Iron Fist comes with that Luke Cage wants to temper a bit," the actor shared.

Colter thinks that the mentor-mentee relationship between Luke and Danny Rand will have a "wisdom-versus-youth quality" and that it will be a good combination to see in the mini-series.

"The Defenders" is expected to premiere this 2017 on Netflix.
