'The Last Man on Earth' season 3 episode 9 spoilers: Midseason finale puts Gail and Melissa's lives on the line

Melissa (January Jones) has been found, but Gail (Mary Steenburgen) is still stuck in the elevator with only Gordon, a handgun, and some boxes of wine to keep her company. With the rest of the survivors thinking she just went off somewhere to unwind and get away from her newly adopted daughter, Carol (Kristen Schaal), any chance of anybody looking for her has just dimmed.

It is for this reason that the upcoming midseason finale will find Tandy (Will Forte) trying to cheer his wife up with a late honeymoon vacation. The first-look photos show them spending time together fishing at a lake, and it seems that Tandy's plan may work out for the best, will this really be enough to take Carol's mind off of her missing mom?

The group will also try their best to contain the unstable Melissa, but they may not do a good job of it. In a scene shown in the episode preview, Todd (Mel Rodriguez) spots his girlfriend on the rooftop, tip-toeing and frolicking around on the ledge like an overgrown pixie with no fear of falling. Is Melissa's life in danger? Will Todd make it up the rooftop in time to bring Melissa back to safer ground?

Gail looks like she's slowly losing her mind, too. If and when the group finally finds her, will they end up with another unstable friend to tend to? Or will Gail turn to some drastic measures to end her suffering even before Carol and the others get to her?

On the other hand, Lewis has been consistently keeping up with his pursuit of aviation expertise with the flight simulator he has previously discovered on his floor. Will some freak accident somehow force him to switch the electricity back on in the other buildings, thereby giving Gail a chance to get out of the elevator?

"The Last Man on Earth" midseason finale will air on Sunday, Dec. 11, at 9:30 p.m. EST on FOX.
