'The Leftovers' season 3 spoilers, news: Series co-creator explains new Australian setting; first official promo image revealed

"The Leftovers" will kick off in a new setting when season 3 premieres next year.

Series creators Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta recently announced that the final season of "The Leftovers" premieres in just a few months, and the series will move to a new setting for its last run. Season 2 saw the Garvey family stay in Texas, but some of them are packing up and moving, once again, this upcoming season to Australia, where Kevin Gary Jr. (Justin Theroux) goes to meet his father (Scott Glenn).

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lindelof explained why the new setting felt right for the show's last leg. "Australia is the end of the world geographically and our show is about the end-of-the-world emotionally. And there's also something about Australian cinema — it's primal, ancient and spiritual — that felt like it fit The Leftovers, whether it's 'Mad Max' movies or 'Walkabout,' or 'Waking Fright' or Peter Weir movies," he explained.

In terms of what lies ahead for the family, Lindelof went on to hint that the next season won't be one happy family trip for the rest of the characters. Not everyone will go with Kevin, but it's not yet clear who exactly won't be going with him.

"Though there are some big crazy ideas in the third-and-final season, we wanted to feel like we were building toward something conclusive," he said, referring to the general structure of the season. "I wanted to take full advantage of the fact that when the audience watches the first episode of season 3 that they know it's the beginning of the end. You don't want to feel like an epilogue, but a climax," he added.

On another note, HBO has released the first promo image for the show's upcoming season. The photo shows Kevin and his dad sitting on top of a roof as they both stared into the horizon. Details on the third season are being kept under wraps, but it was recently confirmed that Glenn has been promoted to series regular, which means he'll have a bigger role in the show.

The third and final season of "The Leftovers" premieres in April 2017 on HBO.
