The shared cinematic universe craze is starting to spread. Disney and Marvel Studios did it with their Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), and after seeing how successful Marvel was with the MCU, Warner Bros. Pictures and DC films decided that they also want a piece of the pie, so the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) was built. Now, Universal Pictures is about the join the fray with their shared monster universe and they are going start with "The Mummy."

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, director Alex Kurtzman teased that the film would contain multiple origin stories.

"There's an origin story happening on two different fronts. I won't tell you too much more than that, other than to say: One of the things that I think has defined Tom Cruise movies, for 30 years, is that Tom Cruise always saves the day," he said.

He did not give away much, but a lot of people are assuming that Dr. Henry Jekyll (Russell Crowe) origin story may be explored as well in this film. It actually makes sense since he's already in the movie, so be prepared to meet Mr. Hyde as well.

Some fans have also speculated that Cruise's character, Nick Morton, may secretly be the next Van Helsing. That's an interesting theory. The character is rumored to tie all the monster films together. It is safe to say that the film will surely explore the origin story of Princess Ahmanet aka The Mummy (Sofia Boutella).

Morton may save the day in the end, but Kurtzman admitted that it was challenging "because monster movies are about characters who are often very out of control, and don't know how to save the day."

"The first thing I said to Tom was, 'It'll be scarier if we can take away the fundamental knowledge that you're gonna solve the problem,'" he added.

"The Mummy" is scheduled to hit cinemas on June 9, 2017.
