'The Originals' season 4 spoilers, plot news: Will Hayley succeed at reversing her family's misfortune? Marcel will never be the 'big bad'

Phoebe Tonkin as Hayley and Riley Voelkel as Freya in "The Originals." | The CW

"The Original" season 3 has just ended and the fate of the Mikaelson siblings turned out to be ambiguous. With Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) and baby Hope being the only apparent survivors, together with Marcel (Charles Michael Davis), season 4 will revolve around the attempt at salvation of the Original family after the Mikaelsons failed to stop the prophecy about their demise from becoming reality. Hayley will take responsibility of salvaging her family while Marcel will take over New Orleans and prove to be a good leader.

Hayley and her daughter Hope will continue to be in hiding away from New Orleans and the former will try and find a cure for whatever can be saved of her defeated family. In the season 3 finale, Rebekah (Claire Holt) returned only to be cursed into becoming a ripper while Freya (Riley Voelkel) will eventually die of poisoning. Elijah (Daniel Gillies) and Kol (Nathaniel Buzolic) were bitten and Klaus (Joseph Morgan) was fatally wounded with a Tunde blade.

According to Michael Narducci when he spoke with TV Line, Hayley will either use her own power as a vampire or tap a witch to seek aid for her to be able to communicate with everyone in the dream world. Whichever way might she choose, she will definitely be out to find something that will rescue her siblings and make them recover from the nightmare of experiencing the prophecy come true. She has a giant puzzle at hand that needs figuring out.

With Hayley on the run and the rest of her family surrendered, weak, and suffering, if not dying, Marcel will try and grab the chance of regaining control and power over the city, although Narducci refuted the speculation that Marcel will be the next main villain in the series, saying that "the character is never a villain in the show."

Marcel has just simply been always a leader, the King of New Orleans, in fact even before the series has seen its commencement. He has massive experience being a leader in a place where there is so much status divide among creatures such as werewolves, witches and humans. Now that he will be the most powerful in the land, things will have to change except for Marcel being someone who is in no way possessed or a monstrous evil.

Still, several new enemies are expected to come the way of "The Originals" in season 4 whose premiere will have to wait until next year to give way to The CW's superhero "crossover" event.
