'The Vampire Diaries' season 8 episode 13 spoilers: Damon reunites with an old enemy; Zach Roerig reveals Matt's role in stopping Cade

Stefan (Paul Wesley) is forced to confront a dark secret on the upcoming episode of "The Vampire Diaries" season 8.

Titled "The Lies Will Catch Up to You," next week's episode will see the Salvatore brothers deal with people and secrets from the past. According to the official synopsis, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Alaric (Matt Davis) cross paths with an old enemy after obtaining a weapon that may be the key to end Cade (guest star Wolé Parks). Stefan, on the other hand, is held captive by an unlikely character who forces him to confront a dark secret.

Elsewhere in the episode, Matt (Zach Roerig) and Caroline (Candice King) are determined to do everything in their power to keep Stefan's violent history from harming him. Cade's reign of terror continues as he sets his eyes on Bonnie (Kat Graham) and tries to get inside her mind.

Matt has always desired to keep humans protected from the supernatural. However, it usually puts him at odds with the rest of the characters, especially in the latest episode. Friday's hour saw Damon ready to trade the Maxwell journal to Cade in exchange for his brother's soul. As expected, Matt disagreed with the idea, and Damon didn't take it that well.

Roerig recently spoke with TV Guide, and he teased that Matt will be playing an important role in stopping Cade. The upcoming episodes will see Matt join the rest of the Mystic Falls Gang as they try to save Stefan.

"Through his relationship with his ancestor and knowledge to be gained there, he's very integral in the plans to kill Cade," the actor said. "And also, Matt physically threatens Cade... We'll get to see Matt step up to Cade as if he's a mortal, the same as Matt. Again, Matt doesn't have his ring anymore, plus, the Devil -- like what is he doing? Those are the kinds of things Matt Donovan doesn't run away from," he went on to say.

The eighth and final season of "The Vampire Diaries" airs every Friday night at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
