'The X-Files' Returning on Fox News: Mulder and Scully Are Back as Hit Sci-Fi Horror Series Returns
The truth is indeed out there.
For the first time in 13 years, "The X-Files" will be returning to television screens with David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson reprising their roles as F.B.I. investigators Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, respectively.
Fox confirmed that the hit sci-fi horror drama will be back for a limited series composed of six new episodes, which will begin production in summer, according to the Entertainment Weekly.
Anderson wasted no time in tweeting the news, according to CNN.
"Mulder, it's me. Are you ready? MT @MichaelAusiello XF Revival Official @DavidDuchovny & @Gillian," Anderson said, retweeting an article from TVLine about the X-File's comeback.
Creator Chris Carter described the show's absence in the last decade as a "13-year commercial break" for what Fox touted as a six-episode "event."
"The good news is the world has only gotten that much stranger, a perfect time to tell these six stories," Carter said in an interview with EW.
Fox Television Group executives Dana Walden and Gary Newman couldn't hide their excitement to "explore the incredible world" with Carter, who was there in all nine seasons of "The X-Files."
Walden and Newman clarified that "The X-Files" was "not only a seminal show for both the studio and the network, it was a worldwide phenomenon that shaped pop culture" as well.
The Fox TV executives promised "a thrilling next chapter of Mulder and Scully" for the legions of fans who embraced the series from the beginning.
After nine years of production, the original series was cancelled in 2002, although Duchovny and Anderson returned for a feature film, "X-Files: I Want to Believe," in 2008.
"The X-Files" original 1993-2002 series revolved around Mulder, an FBI agent who believes in paranormal phenomena, and Scully, who serves as a check on his impulses.
The series produced some memorable characters particularly the Smoking Man, a key focal point of the series' various conspiracy theories, and resulted in two spinoff movies.
