"This Is Us" had viewers in tears and on the edge of their seats after the midseason finale ended on a cliffhanger with Toby's (Chris Sullivan) fate left hanging. The freshman series whose compelling story has captured the hearts of viewers will return next year, hopefully with some answers regarding Toby's condition.

To recall, "This Is Us" episode 10's final moments saw Toby collapsing on the Pearson's living room floor after surprising Kate (Chrissy Metz) during their Christmas celebration at Randall's (Sterling K. Brown) home in New Jersey. The installment ended with Toby on the operating table as doctors tried their best to revive him. While there is no answer yet as to whether Toby lives or dies, some of the cast members have revealed a few details for what's to come.

According to Justin Hartley, who plays Kevin, this experience will bring him closer to his twin sister.

"These two are already so insanely close that I think he feels a lot of her pain and he wants to be there for her, and so it will probably keep them as close as they ever were. He'll try to be there for her as much as he can," the actor told TVGuide.

While Toby–Kate fans are hoping for the best, the situation may be more complex as a new man will be entering Kate's life in the second half of the season. Deadline reported earlier this month that Adam Bartley has been cast in a recurring role and will be playing Duke, a worker at a horse barn.

When "This Is Us" returns in January 2017 with the episode "The Right Thing to Do," viewers will find out whether Kate's difficult time will be due to Toby's death or not.

"Obviously, I am pulling for Toby and I will say that the next episode there will be some sort of resolution," Mandy Moore, who portrays Kate's mom, Rebecca, told reporters at the Critics' Choice Awards last week (via HollywoodLife).

Moore also revealed that viewers will see the moment when Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and Rebecca find out that they are having triplets.

"It is pretty crazy!" the actress added.

"This Is Us" will return to NBC on Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2017 at 9 p.m. EST.
