'This Is Us' midseason premiere spoilers: family drama reveals Toby's fate in the first 5 minutes of the installment
The packet of Kleenex will once again come handy as "This Is Us" returns tonight to divulge Toby's (Chris Sullivan) fate after that Christmas dinner shocker that sent him to the hospital.
Creator Dan Fogelman has previously stated that folks in the writer's room have no intentions of dragging the cliffhanger that is Toby's future, which means that by the show's midseason premiere, fans will already know what will happen to him moving forward. Furthermore, it appears that "This Is Us" picks up almost where they left off five weeks ago. "You find out if he made it in the first five minutes of the episode," the show boss added in a conversation with Entertainment Weekly.
The reveal, which is equally anticipated as well as dreaded, will spell the difference in the Pearson family, which is either they are grieving or sighing with relief especially Kate (Chrissy Metz) who has just gotten back together with her on-and-off boyfriend. While Metz, as expected, cannot reveal anything more regarding the future that lies ahead for Toby, she, however, divulged some nuggets of information about how her character will be affected by his life and death ordeal.
"When you see somebody that you love dearly finally making a point to do everything he can to be in your life and then something this traumatic happens, it causes her to really second guess and really to weigh what's important to her and the repercussions of her decisions," the actress said in a separate chit-chat with Entertainment Weekly. "She has a lotta, lotta thinking to do.
An episode of "This Is Us" will obviously not be complete without its signature time jump. Tonight's installment will transport viewers to Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and Rebecca's (Mandy Moore) early days upon knowing that they will be having triplets. The young couple appears to be struggling at the thought of raising three kids all at once especially Rebecca who did not want any children originally. However, Jack makes it work with a home and a nursery with three cribs for their upcoming little ones. Fogelman belatedly shares that the upcoming outing titled "The Right Thing to Do" will even show the Pearsons even before they found out that they were having triplets. "We go back to their pre-Big Three period — actually, we start early in the pregnancy," he hinted, "before they even knew they were having triplets." It is also important to note that viewers will have another run-in with Dr. K and see how he gets connected with the budding family prior to their meet-up in the debut outing moving forward in the season.
Elsewhere Randall (Sterling K. Brown) also has some personal affair to attend to as he tries to get used to William's (Ron Cephas Jones) relationship with Jesse (Denis O'Hare). Meanwhile, Kevin (Justin Hartley) seemingly appears to find himself in a love triangle when Olivia suddenly pops back into his life.
"This Is Us" returns tonight for the latter half of their smashing debut season at a bit of a later time at 10 p.m. ET on NBC.
