'Thor: Ragnarok' release date and updates: Jeff Goldblum prepares for his role as the Grandmaster
Taika Waititi's "Thor: Ragnarok" is currently shooting in Australia, and the movie has a star-studded cast in its roster with the likes of Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Anthony Hopkins, Tom Hiddleston and Cate Blanchett. The movie also features "Jurassic Park" star Jeff Goldblum. He will be playing the role of the Grandmaster.
In an Instagram post, Goldblum has shared a picture of himself preparing for the role in which he can be seen reading "The Mighty Thor #374." What's interesting is that the story had nothing to do with the Grandmaster at all, but the character who had a central role in it — Hela, who is being played by Cate Blanchett in the movie. With that in mind, it's quite possible that Hela and the Grandmaster could be interacting with each other in the movie.
There are also rumors that the Grandmaster in this story will be the owner of the gladiator arena where Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) will run into each other. This doesn't go stray too far from the comic version of the Grandmaster as well, because that character has a famous penchant for pitting two opposing teams against the other. It is highly possible that Thor and Hulk could find themselves fighting for the enjoyment of Grandmaster Goldblum.
In the comics, the Grandmaster is an ancient being, much like "The Guardians of the Galaxy's" collector played by Benicio de Toro, who was once in possession of the Mind Gem before he lost it to Thanos. In the current Marvel Cinematic universe, the Mind Gem is what gave life to Vision (Paul Bettany); so either the Grandmaster already lost it in this story, or he is in possession of another Infinity Stone, or the plot could forgo his connection with the stones altogether.
"Thor: Ragnarok" hit theaters on Nov 3, 2017.
