'Tokyo Ghoul' season 3 release date, plot news: Viz Media dispels rumors about new season

It seems that fans who celebrated the news that "Tokyo Ghoul" will be getting a third season celebrated too early because Viz Media dispelled rumors that the anime series will be getting a new season.

Reports earlier surfaced that Kevin Hamric of Viz Media, which publishes the series, announced that the third season is upcoming. This has led a lot of fans to celebrate, believing that "Tokyo Ghoul" will finally return on-screen. However, Comic Book reported that the company has since denied it, with Anime News Network saying that Hamric either "misspoke or was misquoted." It clarified that "My Hero Academia," another anime, is getting a new season and not "Tokyo Ghoul."

This is not the first time that a rumor surfaced about a new season of "Tokyo Ghoul," only to be proven false. In 2015, there was buzz that season 3 will air in 2016. However, it turned out that a mobile game, instead of new episodes of the anime, was released within the said timeline.

The lack of information about the anime series has now led some to believe that "Tokyo Ghoul" will be canceled. On the other hand, Viz Media has announced that the manga will be updated by autumn because the company was able to obtain the license to release the sequel.

"Tokyo Ghoul," which was written by Sui Ishida, follows the story of Ken Kaneki, who transforms into a half-ghoul after a fateful encounter with a girl. He will have to keep his dark secret, even as he struggles to control the urges to give in to the hunger. It is set in a dystopian world where zombie-like ghouls eat human flesh in order to survive.

The last episode of season 2 of "Tokyo Ghoul" aired in 2015. A live-action film based on the series is slated to be shown in 2017.
