Trevor Noah, New Host of 'Daily Show', Under Fire Over Alleged Anti-Jewish and Sexist Tweets
Trevor Noah, the newly named host of "The Daily Show," has already found himself in trouble this early as a result of the tweets he made on his Twitter account. A native of South Africa, Noah is due to take over the job from Jon Stewart who will retire later this year.
Dating back to 2009, Noah's tweets appeared to be directed against Jews and women in general.
Unlike the current host of "The Daily Show," Noah is not well known in the United States. But this could change when he takes over the job later this year.
Previously Noah performed stand-up comedy acts in various locations worldwide and had appeared on the "The Daily Show" thrice. The comedian has over two million followers on his Twitter account, and he uses it often to tweet jokes.
Within a day of him being chosen to take over from Stewart, people started criticizing Noah for his apparently anti-Semitic views. He posted: "Behind every successful Rap Billionaire is a double as rich Jewish man. #BeatsByDreidel."
Noah also raised angry eyebrows over this tweet: "Almost bumped a Jewish kid crossing the road. He didn't look b4 crossing but I still would hav felt so bad in my German car."
Giving an inkling of his views on women, Noah tweeted that "a hot white woman with a** is like a unicorn. Even if you see one, you'll probably never get to ride it."
He also once tweeted: "Oh yeah the weekend. People are gonna get drunk & think that I'm sexy!' - fat chicks everywhere."
The New York Times said that while it is normal for comedians to post irreverent statements on social media, it appeared that "Mr. Noah's jokes can test the boundaries of what is socially permissible and what is in bad taste."
Following the outrage expressed on Twitter over Noah's tweets, Comedy Central released a statement supporting him. The show said "Noah pushes boundaries and spares no one, himself included," adding that to "judge him or his comedy based on a handful of jokes is unfair."
Noah continues to take on his critics on his Twitter account. He recently posted: "Twitter does not have enough characters to respond to all the characters on Twitter." However, he deleted the post shortly after writing it.
